Every essay I have ever loved has been rewritten more times than its author admitted. The good sentences are not the ones that arrive whole. They are the ones that survive.
Revision is the part of writing that is actually thinking.
Give a paragraph enough time and it will start to tell you what it wanted to say. Give it more time and it will tell you what you actually think.
